The story begins with founder Marvin Baker, who found himself at a crossroads after losing his job at a local plant. Rather than seeing uncertainty, Marvin saw opportunity. He recognized that Monticello needed a dedicated electrical supply store, and with determination and a vision for the future, he opened Baker’s Electrical Supply in a rented building.

Starting a new business was not without challenges. Establishing credibility with suppliers and building a customer base took persistence and patience. Yet Marvin’s dedication to serving customers and meeting local needs laid a strong foundation. Over time, word spread, relationships grew, and Baker’s steadily earned the trust of contractors, homeowners, and businesses throughout the region.

A decade later, the company entered a new chapter when Marvin’s son, Marty Baker, returned home in 1999 to join the family business. Bringing fresh ideas and a forward-thinking approach, Marty helped modernize operations by introducing computer systems and improving efficiency.

That same year, the company moved into its current building, creating a stronger foundation for future growth. As demand increased, the facility was expanded in 2003 to a 9,000-square-foot operation, providing the space needed to better serve an expanding customer base while accommodating a growing inventory and broader range of services.

As the years passed, Baker’s Electrical Supply continued to evolve. The family opened a second location in Crossett, broadening its reach and strengthening its presence throughout southeast Arkansas.

In October 2010, the company expanded beyond electrical supplies by purchasing a plumbing supply business and establishing Allied Plumbing and Hardware Supply. This move allowed Baker’s to become a more comprehensive resource for customers across multiple trades while continuing its commitment to exceptional service.

While new locations, larger facilities, and expanded product offerings have all contributed to Baker’s success, the heart of the business has always been its people. Long-term employees have helped create a culture of knowledge, reliability, and personal service that customers have come to expect. At the same time, multiple generations of the Baker family have remained actively involved, ensuring that the company’s values stay firmly rooted in the principles that inspired its founding.

More recently, the next generation has helped identify new opportunities to meet the community’s changing needs. Seth Baker, Marty’s son, played a key role in expanding the company’s services by introducing generator sales and service. Following severe winter storms and widespread power outages, Seth recognized the growing demand for dependable backup power solutions. His efforts have allowed Baker’s to provide customers with added peace of mind while continuing the company’s tradition of responding to local needs.

Today, as Marty begins to consider retirement, another transition is taking shape. Seth is preparing to lead the company into the future, carrying forward the customer-focused approach and steady growth that have defined Baker’s Electrical Supply for more than three decades.

What makes this story especially meaningful is that it is now a fourth-generation legacy. Seth’s children are already learning the business, gaining firsthand experience in the values of hard work, service, and community commitment that have guided the company since 1989.

From a small rented building to a trusted regional supplier, Baker’s Electrical Supply stands as a testament to entrepreneurship, perseverance, and family. As the company looks ahead, its mission remains unchanged: providing friendly service, reliable expertise, and dependable solutions to the people of Monticello and the surrounding communities.

For more than 35 years, Baker’s Electrical Supply has been helping power homes, businesses, and projects throughout the area. More importantly, it has been building something even stronger—a legacy that continues to serve generations of families, both inside and outside the business.
